10-man Strict, Gear Score, Cataclysm and other stuff
Well, this post is borne on lack of chocolate, lack of sleep, heat and humidity, having to work full-time and the fact that my kids have now stopped school for 9 weeks of summer holidays. It will be a random outburst of potential emoness and whine. There may be some flashes of insight and good stuff, but who knows where it will end up as I’m typing in my lunch half hour and have no set post in mind.
First - I got my snow-filled scythe from Ahune, who firmly refuses to drop the pet for my friends who want it.
Second - I had my monthly emo outburst. I decided that I wasn’t sure if I still wanted my guild to be 10-man Strict. Many of the guild have alts outside of the guild because they have done ICC25 and we have no wiggle room left to stay in our strict ranking (1st on the realm out of 6 guilds, but we are the only raiding one; 41st in Europe; 104th in the World). I would love all my friends to be together.
There is a new ranking - 10 man Casual - where we could have competition on our realm and this set me off. In the end I decided that I like being strict. It is more of an achievement and to me does not smack of “I’m only running 25 man to get loot”. If you have a guild that wants to do 25 man raids, fine - do 25 man raids. If not - why bother?
This brings me to my next point - Gear Score. Yeah, it’s a measure of your gear. It is not a measure of your skill. Seph currently has a gear score of 5960 according to wftgearscore or less if you look at GuildOx which doesn’t seem to realise that I have the Heroic version of my dagger. I have never set foot in ICC25. I have bought some BOEs that drop there, but I have not been. I have one piece of T10 gear because I won the trinket that dropped when we killed BQ heroic. I rank 208th on our realm (of people who have looked themselves, or been looked up by wtfgearscore website). Reminds me of the Epeen add-on theing that went about on April Fools day

So - people using the argument that you have to run 25 man raids to get the best gear and therefore GS are talking out of their backsides.
One downer is that we won’t be able to do 25 man Halion until after Cataclysm drops and that is a shame given the lovely trinkets that he drops.
Halion - we tried him last night! We did quite well, getting to Phase 3 fine and then getting a bit tired by then. I was actually amazed by my performance. I am without question a slow learner. I keyboard turn, I am old and have slow reactions, I have a little monitor, I have healer tunnel vision on my grid squares - all of these, but I only got zapped once in the beams, then learnt that and did not die in a pool of fire, a meteor or a shadow zone.
It felt good to be trying something new again and makes me look forward to Cataclysm.
Oh yes, Cataclysm. I would like a beta key,but if I don’t get one I’ll not be too upset. I had one for LK and only found my way about Dalaran, saw the new world and checked out pets. I think that all I would do if I got a Cataclysm one would be something similar. I am most looking forward to being able to fly everywhere because I have challenges jumping to get to IF airport for example. Son has escorted me there, but he had to do the tricky jumps for me!
OK - time’s up - back to work …. I might spout some more later, or I might not. Remind me to yap about Halion though and how people expect to be able to plough through new content on the first night, in pugs and have forgotten how to have patience and learn and progress. (I have a grumpy Old Women style post in my head about that one)
In the mean-time - take a look at this - it really made me giggle… Have a look at them all - they are great
I do like this from Cataclysm. The yellow text on things get me some days

Yeah, I am surprised by my GearScore too when I look at some people I know who do 25 man raids all the time. I work hard to buy the best stuff I can and gem with top gems etc. Having one main gives me a focus for my gold spending
I think Halion will go down for us soon. We only had about 40 minutes on him by the time we’d got a raid together and cleared the trash and had a “brb baby” break and stuff.
As a guild we do use the buff in ICC10, but I think we were on 10% the first time we killed LK, so we should be able to kill Halion I think. At the moment we take who and what class we can though because we’re going through the summer lull and sign-ups are a bit erratic

It took us 3.5h hours to kill it, so it’s not easy… but it’s definitely doable
(if you don’t put the panicky healer in the portal)

I still can’t believe that Blizzard are now supporting the theft of a kobold’s candle! This is outrageous! Gerald must fight meta-textual forces.

Wow, I didn’t know there was such good gear from 10-mans… I raided 10/12 25-man before we made my current 10-man guild (so I got a fair bit of gear from there) and my GS was, on last check, exactly 5999.
Halion is a bitch, especially if you’re spoiled with the ICC buff, but it’s a fun fight! (Especially after I got swapped outside and didn’t have to deal with the beams anymore…)
As for the 10 man casual rankings, they are the best thing that happened to GuildOx imo. When me and my friends made our guild, we didn’t plan on it being 10 strict, but we only do 10 mans. However, since most of us *come* from 25-man guilds, GuildOx sees the guild as a whole as having 8/12 ICC25 (=automatic boot from the 10 strict ranking, of course). It’s even more frustrating because, with our 25 man ranking so high, we’re not in the 10 man casual either… because we don’t have the 5000 points difference required. A new heroic boss kill should bump up there though, and then epeen!
